Kaiyuan Tan is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science at Vanderbilt University, advised by Professor Thomas Beckers. Prior to joining Vanderbilt, he completed his M.S. in Electrical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis with thesis in 2023, where he worked with Professor Yiannis Kantaros. He earned his B.Eng. in Information Engineering from Sun Yat-Sen University, China, in 2021. Where he was selected as the member of extraordinary class.
Kaiyuan's research interests span robotics, decision under uncertainty quantification, and machine learning. His current research focused on advancing physically accurate, learning-based modeling and safe control of physical and robotic systems. His research goal is to advance of safe and meaningful interactions between robot and human, ensuring that robot systems can maintain stability and avoid failures in the context of uncertainty. He has published in top venues such as ICRA, L4DC, and IFAC.
Besides research, Kaiyuan loves animals and nature. He owns a working line German Shepherd named Rocket, who is excellent at guarding and protecting his family. Rocket is also a certified service dog, and Rocket loves comfort Kaiyuan when he is down. And Kaiyuan is a texas hold'em poker enthusiast. He is a member of the Barrel Poker Club and play 1/3, 2/5, 5/10 hold'em games. He wins more than 23 big blinds per hour on average. You can find him playing live stream poker at OG clubhouse live on youtube. His favorite poker strategy is to play a tight-aggressive style based on game theory, and he is always looking for new ways to improve his game. His favorite poker player is Garrett Adelstein.
